The Big East AQ BCS Bid?

Question by penguin213: The Big East AQ BCS Bid?
Ok so I’m a little confused right now with the Big East AQ bid? Alright let’s say that the Big East losses it’s AQ bid will another conference get it or will the BCS only have 4 AQ bids? I know for a fact that there is no way that Conf. Usa and MTN. West merger would ever get an AQ bid. Also here is my proposed Big East divisions that could be used.

West Division:
Boise State
Houston
SMU
BYU
Air Force
Louisville

East Division:
UCF
USF
Cincinnati
UCONN
Navy
East Carolina/Army

So tell me what you think? I’m not a fan of the Big East but i’m a huge fan of UH and Boise State.

Pitt, Syracuse, and WVU left the Big East. They were really the living members of the conference. The AQ status will be dropped soon. All the rest will leave and the Big Easy will no longer exist for football. Just Basketball.

What do you think? Answer below!

  1. The Big East will keep the AQ status until after the 2013 regular season. That’s because the current BCS contract with the conferences and the TV networks goes until then.

After that, the Big East could be in deep doo doo when it comes to keeping the AQ. A reevaluation determining the AQ status for all conferences will be done using the member teams performances for the years 2008-2011.

The BCS uses a calculation to determine which conferences get the AQ status. The factors considered are:
    (1) the ranking of the highest-ranked team in the final BCS standings each year
    (2) the final regular-season rankings of all conference teams in the BCS computer rankings each year
    (3) the number of teams in the top 25 of the final BCS standings each year

I don’t know how the math is done but recent evaluations by the spots media before the Big East lost any schools showed the following (not including 2011, obviously):
    SEC (0.699)
    Big 12 (0.668)
    Big Ten (0.582)
    Pac-12 (0.505)
    ACC (0.492)
    Big East (0.486)
    MWC (0.468)

A rating of 0.500 is generally considered the cut off point for getting an AQ status but that number is not set in stone.

But the problem for the Big East is that the performances of the individual schools included in the calculations for the years being evaluated go with the school to the new conference.

So with all the realignment that is going on, you can see the trouble the Big East may have. You can also see why the Big East has targeted the schools like TCU, Houston, BYU, and Boise State for joining the conference. The Big East wants the performances of those schools for the years 2008-2011 to be included in their evaluation score. Of course, TCU has is already out of consideration.

So at this point it’s hard to predict what will happen since we don’t know what the various conference alignments will look like after 2013. The BCS could change the evaluation process because of all the bowl and other TV money involved. And if any conference(s) loses an AQ, there could be lawsuits that could tie up the whole process in court.

Regardless, it’s going to be interesting to watch what goes on for the next couple of years.
