Oregon Christian University Sends Students on Four Spring Break Service Trips
Newburg, OR (Vocus) March 6, 2010
More than 60 students and employees from George Fox University will spend their weeklong spring break helping others as part of the university’s 19th annual Spring Serve.
During the week of March 21-28, students will travel to Los Angeles and Washington state locations Yakima, Seattle and Neah Bay to work on service projects in diverse cross-cultural settings.
The following are descriptions of the four trips:
Near Yakima, Wash., a team of 12 will do physical labor and minister to troubled youth at the Flying H Youth Ranch, a Christian residential program for teenage boys who are struggling within their families.
A team of 21 students will serve at various ministries in Seattle, including Urban Impact and New Horizons Ministries. Students will do everything from working at an after-school tutoring program to working with runaways and prostitutes.
In Los Angeles, a team of 12 students will serve at the L.A. Dream Center, working at a food bank, playing with kids, feeding the homeless on skid row, and hanging out with homeless youth.
A group will go to the Makah Indian Reservation in Neah Bay, Wash., where they will work to maintain and improve the natural environment, paint a church, garden, and perform various other tasks for the community.
Participating students are selected through an application process. They pay part of the costs of their trips, which are subsidized by the student government. Each of the trips has a faculty, staff, or alumni leader, assisted by two undergraduate student leaders.
The trips are part of the university’s commitment to Christian service, which also includes an annual day of service for which the university closes; community service projects that reach out to Newberg, Ore., and surrounding communities; and an urban services program that sends students to Portland and Salem, Ore., to build relationships with the homeless.
George Fox University is ranked by Forbes as one of the top 100 colleges in the country and highest among Christian colleges. George Fox is the only Christian university in the Pacific Northwest classified by U.S. News & World Report as a national university. More than 3,300 students attend classes on the university’s campus in Newberg, Ore., and at teaching centers in Portland, Salem, and Redmond, Ore., and Boise, Idaho. George Fox offers bachelor’s degrees in more than 40 majors, degree-completion programs for working adults, five seminary degrees, and 12 master’s and doctoral degrees.
