  1. Has it occurred to you that maybe there’s a reason that “everyone wears sweats”? Practice dresses are expensive – you won’t find one under $ 50 – but they don’t DO anything. They don’t improve your skating at all, and they do the same job that a skirt, a pair of leggings or sweats would do.

The current trend at my rink is a pair of dance shorts (some places call them booty shorts but I’m not sure they’re the same) with skating tights underneath. Works just fine. I wear leggings and I don’t have a problem.

Save your money for more important things, like extra lessons, or new boots or blades, or a competition dress.

  2. You can ask about a dress resale at your rink. We have those and people sell practice dresses for dirt cheap, like $ 10. Plus, you can try them on and don’t have to worry about shipping.

  3. First I’d suggest you check out this website:
    http://www.frogsonice.com/skateweb/business.shtml
It has EVERY figure skating retailer listed online. You will have fun browsing for hours at all the stuff for sale! Everything from practice dresses to competition dresses, to boots, to accessories, to training aids. You name it, one of the stores on this website will have it. I’m sure you can find at least one store that will have cheap dresses or skirts. http://www.dancefactoryoutlet.com is a good one – its geared more toward dancers, but it has tights and skirts and things for figure skaters sometimes (right now they have some skorts that are only $ 3.00)
Other than that, just always check local rinks during competitions or ice shows, because thats when a lot of them have consignment sales, and figure skaters will sell their used dresses for pretty cheap.

  4. you really dont need to have a practice dress. there are a few problems with practice dresses. one, they are expensive, and it would be much better for your training to invest that $ on other things like lessons and ice-time. two, when you start working on jumps that you fall a lot on, you will need butt pads/ cushions. well it is a lot harder to put on but pads with a full body dress than it is in lets say a skirt or leggings. three, its much easier to change from street clothes into a skirt or leggings and vise-versa because you can keep your T-shirt/ sweater on. thats really important if you skate in the morning and rush to school. most skaters dont wear practice dresses.

the price of dresses are REALLY expensive. but i have a friend who goes to vietnam and buys dresses there for like $ 10. you might find a website that you can place orders for a practice dress.
