Question by hereceivedacall: How do I find more information about laws and regulations regarding public outdoor drinking fountains?
I want to find out how many/if there are any in my city (Boise, Idaho). I want to know if there are any regulations on placing them outdoors. I was also curious about the price to install them and make them functional in the winter.
It really bothers me that the only public drinking fountains I see in my town are indoors. The population that really needs access to this water will often not be allowed into these businesses.
I want to work to make water available for everyone.
Do any of you have any ideas on how I could start to work for this? I don’t just want to passively observe this issue. I think something should be done!

Go to your city hall, they will have the regulations and the such.

  1. Just Google that sh*t man….everyone knows you can find just about anything on Google lol

  2. If you can show that people are passing out from dehydration on a large scale you might have a case. But public water fountains are not a necessity of life. Better to work for more public toilets.

This is a social issue, not a legal one. The answer I came up with is to carry a water bottle with me and fill it whenever I can.

Find out who your city council man/woman is and write them
a letter or e-mail. They should be able to find out the local
ordinances (if any) that regulate water fountains. It’s probably
just something that “just was” back in the days of horses and
Model A cars. I don’t know who would oversee the maintenance of them. Parks and Recreation? (Since most are found in public parks/squares) Streets and Sanitation?

Your local representative is one to start with. Ask questions
and raise your concerns. They can tell you how to proceed
    from there.

  4. You won’t find any rules, regualations or laws that require outside public drinking fountains. Normally, the only place you find them is in parks and if winters are cold, they are shut off then.
