Question by NCAAF Fan: Are you shocked Boise State had zero 1st place votes in the Coaches poll?
I realize that most of the voters in the USA today poll don’t actually watch games that have teams involved that don’t directly impact them (Doesn’t involve a team they play this year) and I also realize that the polls are most of the time delegated to one of the Coaching assistants who doesn’t want to draw attention so they vote along traditional lines to not draw attention to their head coach BUT REALLY?
With 8 AP first place votes and Boise State playing probably the best football played by any team in the last few years during the 1st quarter (before most people went to bed) how can not one of the coaches not be getting this?
Long story short either they are not watching the games or they are fixing the poll.
I look forward to peoples arguments, answers or statements LoL
P.S. Saying Virginia Tech is just a ACC team is like saying Boise State is just a WAC team or that Vandy is amazing because they are in the SEC. Its called an outlier, its a part of statistics and sports. It is ignorant to base a teams ranking or perceived strength based on conference affiliation if they are at the top or the bottom of the conference UNLESS they are at the top of the best conference or the bottom of the worst than you can assume they are great or bad BUT not necessarily the greatest or the worst.
DaCoach – Wow, Boise State did schedule some good teams, they don’t control their conference affiliation (finally was offered a minor upgrade next year) or schedule so you double failed LoL I just wish the SEC didn’t turn down the open invitation/challenge of a one game at the SEC teams stadium (no return trip sweetheart deal) offer that Boise State made.
I am really enjoying the barrage of ignorance so far LoL
The one point any person has made is the fact that Boise State almost blew a lead… I will give you that but besides that Boise State DOESN’T control its schedule its a well documented fact (you do realize Boise got payed half the money VT did to go on the road in a risky season opener right?) and Boise State has not been offered a spot in a BCS conference.

It just proves that coaches know a bit more about the game than writers or knee-jerk reactionary fans.

No, they looked good, but they didn’t accomplish anything to garner any 1st place votes!
no because they could have very well lost that game, and v.t. came out rusty to start with, they are usally a better team that that first half. boise state just does not play enough top ranked teams to deserve to be a no 1 team. i mean alabame has to play the likes of lsu, florida, georgia, tennessee, auburn, and those teams are top 20 ranked teams most of the year.it is not boise states fault they play in a weaker league, but that is a fact that will always keep them from the top spot, they might very well go undefeated, and the only way they can winn a championship is if the teams like alabama or florida or ohio state lose a game and they can get to no 2 ranking at the end of the year , then they can play for a championship
Absolutely not. Watched the game yesterday and wasn’t overly impressed by either team. Boise‘s good but can you really look at them compared to an Alabama and say they’re a better team? No.
Best football…VT shot themselves in the foot in the first quarter.
I would drop them in polls, but that is just me. They were handed 17 points and almost blew it. I would place TCU and Texas ahead of Boise State.
i not shocked anymore
In my opinion the only two teams that should have received any 1st place votes are Bama and Ohio St. These two teams proved why they are ranked 1 and 2 in both polls. Boise St did have a tremendous 1st quarter but then almost lost the game. Did you watch that part of the game? I am pretty sure the coaches did which is why Boise did not get any first place votes. Also, playing a great 1st quarter does not guarantee any first place votes.
As far as strength of schedule goes, this has been a part of the equation for a while now. If your team wants to legitimize their debate to play for the national championship then schedule some upper tier teams to help bolster the power ranking.
Yes i would vote boise state #1…Alabama is way way over rated….and if boise state or tcu played them last year for the national title either one would have run all over them just like utah did the year before…ALABAMA doesnt belong in the top 5
I wouldn’t say that the coaches’ poll dissed Boise. They’re still ranked in the top 5. I wouldn’t call Boise’s performance last night the greatest ever. It was a good win. They beat a team that they should have beat, which confirmed their status in the top 3 -5.
If Bama or Ohio State lose to lesser ranked teams then that will be Boise’s opportunity to jump them in the polls.
Shows coaches know more than sports writers. Boise blew a 17 point lead and almost lost to lesser ranked team. And they deserve first place votes because of this? Don’t think so.
Why would you vote them #1? Weak schedule in a weak conference. You’ll be able to tell later on in the season. Week #1 who is to really say how good Virginia Tech/Boise State truly are? We could’ve been watching the #18/#19 team last night. Unfortunately with Boise‘s schedule there is no way to really pit them against worthy opponents. All of this talk is b.s. Without a playoff system #1 through #4 teams all have a legit arguments as to why they should be in the BCS Championship.
In conlcusion, Boise State is overrated. They may climb a spot in the rankings come midseason, but once Texas, Florida, Alabama, Ohio State get into the rough parts of their schedule and remain unbeaten, Boise will fall. Until they jump into one of the BCS Conferences they do not deserve a bid.
At least go Independent and prove themselves. Do what Notre Dame does and play Michigan, USC, UCLA, every year. Maybe then you’ll get some consideration.
EDIT: The conference does not have to initiate talks with a team. The door swings both ways. IMHO Boise State does not want to enter a big by conference in fear their “victorious” cloak may be pulled aside to reveal the best team in the WAC aka the most athletic quadriplegic.
I don’t see how you can judge Boise for the first game of the season like that. I suppose they have to win all their games 72-0 and roll up 700 yards like Oregon did to get any street cred. That’s ridiculous. Where’s the competitive spirit? Where’s the amateur sports ideal? Oh, right. With the BIG schools, the money is still there!
Boise State played a road game the first game of the year, West Coast to East Coast, and beat the #6 team whom everyone THINKS is a legit Top Ten team, and yet the elitist diehards got nothing and make excuses. If Texas or Bama DO lose a game, you do NOT have my sympathy. They don’t take chances or they’d make a conference for just them, like the English Premiere Soccer League.
I’ll say this again for people who don’t know it. Boise would get more teams to take them up on their offer if they didn’t want $ 1 million per game. Yes, they really do charge that much for someone to play them. If you really want to be a big-time program you don’t do things like that. And Ole Miss did take Boise up on their offer even with the ridiculous amount of money Boise wants for the games (Ole Miss got a deal by only having to pay $ 900,000). I’m not sure how you missed that or why you focus so much on the SEC but then most SEC haters don’t really make a lot of sense. Also, Georgia and Arkansas have already each played Boise State so this “the SEC is avoiding Boise” crap really needs to stop.
As for the rankings, at this point it’s really too hard to tell who really should be getting the first-place votes so I’m not going to complain either way at this point. If they’re dominating everybody in October and still not getting any votes then maybe we can complain.
Roscoe, most of the time I’ve heard of deals around the $ 300,000-$ 500,000 range for a one-game series where one team doesn’t travel to the other team’s stadium. It’s by far the largest amount of money Ole Miss has ever paid anyone, I know that much. As for the attitude about Ole Miss, that’s probably true, but that attitude will get Boise State beat, I can guarantee you that, if they come into Oxford like that. I guess Boise just can’t be made happy though unless everyone does everything the way they want and kisses their a$ $ too. I didn’t have anything against them at first but I’m really looking forward to them getting whooped next year. Ole Miss should be much better next year than they are this year if Houston Nutt can survive this season without dropping any more games the way he did on Saturday. When did Arkansas and Auburn become great teams all of a sudden?
No I am not shocked 1 bit. Polls tend to be non-judged beauty contests where conference affiliation and coaching trees have more to do with results than team performance during a victory. At least before this BCS “title” game crap people were able to watch games & get up to speed on title contenders. Did it still result in popularity contests? Absolutely, but it gave an opportunity for the non-big name schools to win a national title.
Now for the goofy answers
It proves coaches know more about the game- Most coaches don’t vote at any point in the process and leave it to the S.I.D. to handle the task. They do however instruct them on who their friends/enemies are and give an update to that list if a coach runs up the score on them or one of their friends/mentors. Think about the time constraints on coach’s folks, do you think they spend any freaking time on something that will not keep them employed during the season?
@ Da coach- What exactly did Alabama & OSU do to garner first place votes? I didn’t know San Jose St. & Marshall were tough opponents with talented teams. Those squads are garbage & if anything BSU & VT should be rewarded for taking on the risk first game of the year. As for scheduling, wake up guy! Teams don’t operate in a vacuum when it comes to creating a schedule. It boils down to Recruiting advantages (why Tenn. plays Pac-10 schools), easy victories & relationships. It’s not hard to figure out, look at team schedules and connect the dots. Here’s 1 for you, FSU didn’t pay Samford all that bread because of open dates!
@ Reb- That statement is silly! The big time programs guarantee more than that for home games with comparable opponents. As for your Ole Miss Rebels, when people talk about BSU scheduling up they aren’t talking about them. In fact Ole Miss isn’t even on the same level as BSU in terms of performance. Don’t feel bad, neither is MSU, Vandy, S.C., Kentucky* & Tenn. (now) are in the same boat with Georgia, Arkansas & Auburn taking frequent trips on the S.S. Mediocrity.
Boise St.
Pluses
Physical team- Their D & O lines were dominating Va. Tech so badly if they didn’t have an extremely athletic QB they would have lost by 3 or more touchdowns.
Offense is still potent
Good special teams
Minuses
Secondary- Their corners are inexperienced and made several mistakes last night and we will see if they improve during the season. Safeties Played horribly!
Mental Errors- To be expected first game of the year, but they kept Va. Tech on the field several times.
*Kentucky is a basketball school so just getting to bowl games in football is good enough.
